Some colleges would like to have you do without student loans. Why? Students end up with a lot of debt, and it's hard for them to make their way in the world while paying off those loans. Davidson College in North Carolina recently announced that it will replace most loans with grants and work-study programs. Other universities (such as Columbia and Princeton) have also made a dent in getting rid of loans.
