Bank Hands Out Poorly Shredded Checks

Monday August 25, 2008
WHH Ranch Company got some unexpected publicity last week. They used shredded checks from a local bank as packing material to keep jars from breaking during shipment. However, the checks were shredded with a simple strip-cut shredder.

A savvy customer checked to see how easy it would be to piece the checks back together, and it was a little too easy. A news video shows several reconstructed checks from just one shipment from the company.

The bank is now using a cross-cut shredder, but it goes to show you how valuable information can fall into the wrong hands -- even if you are careful your bank might not be. It's ultimately up to you to watch your accounts and your credit for signs of anything fishy. [via Consumerist]
