Wamu Cards Absorbed by Chase

Monday January 26, 2009
Since Chase acquired Washington Mutual, we've been waiting to see what Wamu customers should expect.

So far, there's been very little change. Wamu's website notes that they're now operated by chase, but not much else has changed. Credit Matters recently covered some news on how credit cards will be handled.

Wamu customers who also have a Chase card may be able to 'combine' the two cards. Your Wamu credit limit would be added to your Chase credit limit, giving you a higher credit limit on your existing Chase card. However, this only applies if you have a zero balance on your Wamu card. This makes life easy for some.

If you don't have an existing Chase card, your Wamu card will eventually be converted to a Chase card. Of course, everything else with Wamu will eventually be rebranded to the Chase name as well. [via Consumerist]

(1) Kay says:

To cardholders’ bitter disappointment, Chase is presently intending to do away with WaMu’s Free FICO Score update, provided monthly as a special privilege to WaMu card customers.

To all current and prospective customers, please contact WaMu 800 356-0011 or 866 892-9268 and Chase 800 945-2000 or 800 247-4080 customer service today, and see if good intentions from group effort can get Chase to honor this important part of the marketing contract terms WaMu has previously provided its customers! This was a significant marketing point & really set WaMu apart from its competition!!

I think the changes that CHASE is making is NOT fair to the people that have been with the WA MU accounts and had FREE FICO. It’s bad enough the % rate we pay but now we get Nadda for FREE.

Thank you for your post.

(4) Anne says:

Chase raised my 12.03% interest rate to 23.83%
immediately after taking over my Wamu credit
card! Pure usery and a disgrace!!

(5) Irving says:

The FICO was one part but they cancelled the real values also, which got me movie tickets for 6.50 apiece, no limit or minimum…

(6) deloris says:

I had a good and long credit card history with wamu. I payed my credit card bill on time and I payed over the minimum payment amount each month. Because I was a good customer I was given reward offers from wamu quite often. After wamu changed to chase my available line of credit dropped dramatically by $12000. According to chase this drop was not because of my payment history with wamu but because of my payment history with another company. When and how I pay another company has nothing to do with how I paid wamu. My history with wamu speakes for itself. In my opinion this is chase’s way of not honoring wamu’s customers and the relationships they have built. It is sad that another company such as chase can take over and break down a good relationship that was built between wamu and it’s customers.

(7) Nicole says:

I never had to call Wamu about much of anything and when I did they took care of it.
I have had to call Chase back everyday and they know nothing about WAMU products so they lie to get you off the phone (untrained).

They raised my rate too, but are supposed to be correcting it.
I have credit protection which is another rip off, because through this transition to Chase, I can not get any correct information. One person told me I no longer had the service until I told them I was being charged for the service ($10.00 more also).
After finally talking to a supervisor; they fired the credit protection people because they have payment protect (their own program; oh no!)
“They have different package and gave you the best one.”
SHouldn’t I have been informed/asked or given the option?

The paperless statement is the only thing Chase has to offer WAMU customers at this time.
I miss the FICO score information and will be calling the number above.

Chase had the opportunity to make this a smooth transition and they did not; so that should tell us something about their unscrupulous business methods.
I was concerned because truthfully, I had not heard anything good about Chase prior to them taking over WAMU.

I AM SO MAD I AM CANCELLING THIS CARD!! I hadno idea ofthechg. I hada Cabellas VISA. They dident take an auto pay so my 13$ payment went to 300! AND THEY WONT FIX IT!!!!!!!! I thinktheyrefaking feesand crap on us!!

(9) Lisa says:

Since the transition to WAMU, Chase raised my DPR/APR from 18% to 25%. This new rate appeared on the first Chase/WAMU credit card statement.

I’ve never been late with WAMU in the 3 years I’ve been with them and always paid 30% more than the minimum due. There was absolutely NO reason for Chase to raise my APR except greed.

April 16, 2009 at 9:26 am
(10) Autumn says:

I too canceled both my cards with chase. I loved wamu and my free credit score! Its sad to see a company that actually cared about its customers taken over by a company that clearly does not. They also raised my rate, canceled my online payments with out telling me and then on my first statement charged a late fee, FIRST STATEMENT! HELLO! I have NEVER been late on anything, i have perfect credit! i had a chase card, and a wamu card. I CANCELED BOTH FOR HOW HORRIBLE THEY’VE BEEN SINCE TAKING OVER WAMU!

April 18, 2009 at 9:00 pm
(11) Butch says:

I have two former low interest WaMu cards. Regardless of how much I charged each month, I always paid the bill in full just before the next statement came out. This results in always having a zero balance on the statements and at the credit bureau while still having the benefit of a recorded transaction history.

Even so, Chase couln’t resist raising the interest rate by 1.25% on the first Chase statement for each card. Not much in the way of a horror story…just an example of their attitude in that no WaMu card is left with original rate. They’ll never see any profit from this move plus will loose all merchant transaction fees because I switched the bulk of all purchases to a different bank card.

April 25, 2009 at 2:02 am
(12) Sherri says:

Chase raised my % rate for no reason. I have a credit score at 802, never a late pymt, and always paid more then the balance due. When I called to request my lower rate, the customer no service agent said I didn’t qualify for a lower rate and informed me that I could cancel the card if I wasn’t happy. Let me just say to anyone thinking of cancelling the card…don’t! Doing so hurts your fico score. A big chuck of your score is based on your credit to debt ratio. If you lower your avail credit, your debt ratio rises and your score plummets. Today I paid off the card to a zero balance. They wont make profit, but I keep the avail. credit. Just be sure every couple of months to make a purchase, even if it’s a candy bar so your card isnt canceled due to inactivity.

May 1, 2009 at 3:19 pm
(13) Bill says:

I had been with WAMU for quite some time when the chase buy out occured, I find that customer service with Chase is terrible, further more they have also raised my rate to 31% more than double the original rate that I paid with WAMU. I have tried speaking with them about it and my received the response that there was nothing that could be done about it and that I should just deal with it. I am happy to say that I am paying my card off and closing the account.

May 1, 2009 at 7:30 pm
(14) Debra Leabo-King says:

I miss the extra advantage with WAMU to get my FICO score for free monthly. This was a major reason in staying with WAMU, as well as, the professional service I received – not to mention the great interest rates. I am hoping that CHASE will want to entice its customers to stay as WAMU did. They definitely will need a “PERK” to keep us.

May 16, 2009 at 10:38 pm
(15) Pete says:

I had two accounts with Wamu and when Chase took over and dropped the free FICo I wasn’t happy about it.

When they jacked my rates up to 29.99% FOR NO REASON (as I ALWAYS paid way over minimum and on time) I called them and told them to cancel and close the accounts.

The rep on the phone warned me of the dangers of canceling as I would have to “re-apply and I would never get the same rates as I have now and it would be difficult to get another account with Chase as I cancelled.

As I had been a WAMU customer for a few years and had a good history with them, I promptly told her to stuff it and that Case is a horrible bank and I would never do business with them again anyway.

May 18, 2009 at 8:00 pm
(16) Bill says:

I received a change in terms notice today and was mad as hell. My credit score is between 750-800 and never been late for a payment. When i first sign up for this credit card with WAMU the APR was 7.99% and Chase raised it to 16.24%. I just don’t understand what their management is thinking about and what happen to the government regulations?. I also hold another Chase card and planning to closed all the credit cards plus checking and savings account. Moving my banking to Wellsfargo. and i’m sure all my 8 brothers and sisters plus their friends and their friends and their friends will hear about this.

May 21, 2009 at 2:08 pm
(17) Laura in Phoenix says:

Same happened to me, Bill. I received my notice last night…the DAY BEFORE the credit card laws change! My APR went from 10% to 13%, which isn’t as bad as many other people are reporting, but they have no reason to do it. I’ve been a model credit card holder….

May 22, 2009 at 8:00 pm
(18) Kimberly Robinson says:

I had a excellent history with Wamu (had two cards with them). I had paid one off and paid much higher than minimum each month on the other. I had scheduled payments online. When they converted my account, they wiped out my scheduled payments and secure messages and never told me, so my payment never drafted. They then tacked on a $40 late fee and raised my rate from 12.969 to 29.99%. When I argued it and sent a copy of my only confirmation email on the scheduled payment they said it didn’t prove it and refused to change anything. Luckily I only had a few hundred left on there that I have since paid off. I would never deal with Chase again.

May 31, 2009 at 4:02 pm
(19) Errin says:

I had 2 accounts with WAMU, a few CD’s and 2 credit cards. Been a customer since WAMU bought out Dime Savings. Never had issues with WAMU. Never had a late payment. Always paid 2-4X the minimum.
When Chase took over they raised my 16% APR to 29.99% for no apparent reason. When I asked/complained they claimed they sent me an opt out letter. I told them “Oh so I’m supposed to damage my credit because of your greed?” The phone rep said there was nothing they could do.

I drained my Chase checking account and opened an account at my hubby’s credit union. I also opened a Visa at the credit union and transferred my credit card balances.
Well wouldn’t you know it…Chase called me wondering if I had a banking problem and if I needed assistance. I told them that THEY had the problem and I would be closing all my accounts with them shortly. I told them I refused to do business with liars and thieves.

June 6, 2009 at 1:32 pm
(20) shane says:

When I emailed Chase to complain they gave me a bunch of legal BS…basicly fibs about legal agreements that obligate them to no longer provide the FICO. Bottom line: Chase takes away useful customer services because they couldn’t care less about customer service/satisfaction (just fat bonuses!)

June 11, 2009 at 2:39 pm
(21) Gregg says:

If your having problems with Chase/Wamu like I am, they not only upped my interest rate but they rerolled my credit protection from Wamu which was $8.00 into the credit protection under chase which not only offers completly different services, but they charge $0.89 for every $100 on the balance. So I have different services for more money with no opt out notice or authorization to change the service. I have the number to their Executive services. 1-888-622-7547. Ext 2995 is Kristy Quentos, and ext 7217 is Jessica Sentek, Tell em Gregg says hello and complain your ass off. Maybe a mob of pissed off customers will change their ways

(22) Laura Lewis says:

I had a Wamu credit card never any problem with it until chase decided to take over my account. I paid it off on the day I received my bill and then I get a statement saying I still owe a dollar. I called and told them my bill was paid in full and that I had cancelled the card. they explained that I still owed a dollar in finance charges which accured even after I had called and asked for my pay off amount. My advice is to tear up this card as soon as possible, they have show their true colors to me and I want nothing to do with them again.

June 22, 2009 at 5:26 pm
(23) JP says:

We had a good history with WAMU. When chase took over, they raised our interest rate from 14% to 31.9%. After complaining to them, they told us to give it 6 months. After that we were to call back and our rate was supposed to be lowered. We made all our payments on time (actually paid much more than the min)yet they still state that our rate cannot be lowered.

I’m paying off the account and closing it as soon as I can.

(24) Tammy says:

My husband has been a loyal customer of Chase for many years. Unfortunately I can not say that they are loyal to him. He had several cards with Chase and all checking and savings with them. Overnight they lowered all the limits on his cards to just a couple hundred dollars over what he owed. These cards were at fixed rates that we very good. He owed less than 40% on his cards, always paid more than the min, and never has been late. This will make it appear to the credit bureau that he looks as if he is maxed, thus lowering his scorce, so they in turn can raise his rates. Not happening we will pay them off, and they will need business again. But they will not get ours! I called to question all this and was told that the credit department does not take calls, and this was told to me by someone in another country.

(25) Ellen says:

Ok, I didn’t see anyone report this and wondered if it had happened to anyone else.
I haven’t been a Wumu credit card holder forever, but I have been one for over 2 1/2 years. I have never been late and have always paid my balance off or paid way over the min payment once someone told me to do it that way to build my score up.
Ok long story short I went to use my card the other day and it wouldn’t work, I called cust service ( another country) and they told me Chase had closed both my accounts due to me being high risk. I said BullS*&^, they gave me some story about my credit report and that was the reason for one of the cards being closed. ( remember I have never been late and pay two weeks before the due date online so it goes in right away) Then the other card the rep said I had a problem with keeping my credit limit maxed out, I was like you can’t be serious. She said that if I couldn’t control my spending they couldn’t carry my credit anymore. Mind you this card she is talking about had one transaction done on it a Balance Transfer of 1250.00. They WuMu offerd me the card, with a 0% interest till 2010 so the card had a 1500.00 limit and I trans the 1250.00. My first payment I paid 300.00 and kept paying 100.00 a month the card is down to 400.00 in just like 6 months and I have never made a purchase on it, so how in the heck are they going to tell me I have a problem with maxing out my credit limit!!! The other card is below 50% so that wasn’t nor has it ever been even close to being max ed out.
Now I have to fight them, because this will mark my credit with card closed with Balance owed. They gave me no warning what so ever can they really do this and get away with it? Is there anything I can do? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

(26) Jill says:

The same thing happened to me today. The card was declined and I rushed home to see what the problem was. I have always paid much more than the minimum and way before the due date. I was no where near the credit limit. We called to find out what the problem was and they gave us the same story that they gave you. I am concerned of what this will do to our credit. It was not closed due to nonpayment or even late payment. We were told it was a “business decision” on their end. How will that effect our credit history. This is a crazy company. By the way – we were also told that we were sent a letter – a letter that we have not received. Also, our account online still reflects the same information as if it is an open account with credit available. I just don’t know what to do about how it is going to effect our credit.

(27) Red says:

!!WARNING CLOSE ALL OF YOUR ACCOUNTS WITH CHASE, NOW!!

I’ve banked with Washington Mutual for 10 years and was the best bank ever THEN in 2009 JP MORGAN CHASE purchased WAMU and the following has happened.
1 – CHASE is Adding on FEES to my once Free Checking.
2 – CHASE Closed My WAMU Credit Card Account Automatically Without Warning, even though I’ve paid more than the Min. Balance, Paid OnTime, and Have a Fico Score in the 700s.

3 – CHASE’s Customer Service Reps are Not Knowledgeable, Disgusting Rude, and Outsoursed to a Foreign Country where you cannot understand these people!

I URGE ALL FORMER WAMU CUSTOMERS now with CHASE, to make a Run on CHASE BANK and TAKE OUT ALL YOUR MONEY, CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNTS, and NEVER EVER DO BUSINESS WITH JP MORGAN CHASE EVER AGAIN!

(28) alicia says:

My WAMU credit card was just closed under my nose because supposedly I am now a ‘high risk’. But, I am not too high risk to still be afforded the pleasure of having a jacked up interest rate of 25% on my other Chase credit card! I have never been late or missed a payment on my WAMU account, and HAD a great standing with that company.

It was not closed due to nonpayment or even late payment. The story I go was the same. I had a $4,000.00 limit owed $280.00 on didnt even have a payment due yet! Talk about embarrasing when the card was declined 2 times. Im so pissed, and hurt. But I feel better after reading I’m not the only one! I’m actually glad that this card was canned after hearing all this! They can take their card and shove it up their _ _ _!!

July 18, 2009 at 2:36 pm
(30) Matt S. says:

Same thing happened to me. Got the WaMu card back when it was the eBay Mastecard thru Providian. Things got better when WaMu took it over. Now chase took it over. I was pissed that I was loosing my free FICO score every month, but I already have a Chase Card and a few accounts with Chase, so it consolidated everything on one website. They also dropped my APR like 2 or 3% when the Chase takeover took place and they transferred over my rewards points with a quick e-mail request.

Few days ago I went to use the card and its declined. I go online and everything looks normal, but my rewards points balance is 0. I call them up and they tell me the account was cancelled due to information they received from Experian. I pulled all 3 reports from annualcreditreport.com and Experian came back clean as a whistle. I decided to read the new terms & conditions packet that came when it changed over to chase and it says right in the cancellation paragraph that they cancel the card at any time, for any reason, and they are not responsible for any consequences of doing so. It even says they have the right to cancel your card and demand payment of the balance immediately. What kind of BS is that?

I’m in the process of buying a house in the next month or two and now my available credit just dropped by 60%! My mortgage bank says the actions taken by Chase won’t affect me getting a mortgage. I did tell them about all the problems I have with chase and their BS cards and they reccomended to change to a different bank, but to wait until after I get the house.

July 18, 2009 at 7:18 pm
(31) Thomas Kolakowski says:

Matt S., I just received letters saying they closed both my Wamu cards based on info from Experian. I checked with Experian and they never requested any information on my account! I am wondering if they are required to receive info from a credit reporting service. I so then they are need to then they acting fraudulently as they are not obtaining any info, just closing down Wamu accounts.

July 19, 2009 at 9:12 pm
(32) Christina says:

Same thing happened to me as with a few other people on here – I had a WAMU card for a little over a year with a credit limit of $2,000, the whole 0% interest on balance transfer things. I never once charged the card up to more than $1500, and I always pay 2 weeks early, $100 over the minimum. I tried to use my card at a restaurant with a group of friends and was so embarassed when it got declined. I went outside to call and ask why, Chase said the account was closed, that they sent me a letter (which I still have yet to receive) and that it was based on information pulled from my credit file. Since getting the card, my credit score has risen by over 50 points, and I have no late payment history on any credit card. I’ve never been late, and have always overpaid on all my credit cards, including the WAMU one. No matter how many times I explained this to the woman on the phone she gave me the same scripted BS about a “business decision based on information frmo my credit file”. I pointed out that my credit file has only improved since opening the card, so that didn’t make much sense; I asked for a supervisor and she refused, but said all calls were monitored by a supervisor, so I said “I certainly hope this call is monitored. I have heard nothing but bad things from Chase customers and now I see why. This is a terrible way to do business, cutting off good customers without warning and for no valid reason,” but of course like you all said, I read the new disclosures and they can basically do whatever they want. They better not try to demand my balance paid in full immediately…. I’m kind of expecting that crap. What a terrible company! I too am really worried about the effect this closed account will have on my credit score – I’ve been carefully monitoring and trying to build my credit, which is why I am fully aware that there has been no adverse action that could have prompted them to cancel my account. A terrible company that rips off its customers in any way they can!

(33) Shane says:

Just received my latest statement. I had a 10.24% in June, and now it is a 14.24%. Never had a late payment….but carry a large balance so this is now an issue. My fault for getting comfortable with the devil.

(34) Lori says:

They raised my rate to 30.9%, my FICO is over 700. Then they closed my 3000.00 account that has never been late and that have had for 4 years. This is unreal and also can damage your credit more then you can image. It is a same that they got our tax dollars as a bail out.

July 20, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Now Hear this. Credit card companies are SCUMBAGS!! They closed my WAMU account as well! Never a missed payment!

(36) Michelle says:

I’m totally disgusted at the ENTIRE CREDIT CARD INDUSTRY!!! A complete scam. I, like the last few customers on here just received a notice that my Wamu card (now with Chase) has been closed!! Never late, always pay the minimum or more. So I try to call and find out what can be done, and was told not a thing. It definitely seems as if Chase is up to something, especially with those that got nailed with a higher interest rate. You can’t negotiate a lower interest because the card is closed now!! Never given any notice either…..just disqusted. Can’t wait to pay them off just to be rid of them. I hope someone files a lawsuit on them for their EVIL practices!!

July 21, 2009 at 12:32 pm
(37) Carrie says:

I just found out that Chase cancelled my card as well. I was a longtime Washington Mutual customer, never had a late payment, even paid off my card a couple of months ago. When Chase took over they increased my interest rate to 29.99% !! So I had planned to pay it off anyways. I think their all along was to hike up interest rates then close accounts so people are stuck paying it. Well, not me! I just paid it off in full so they can BITE ME! I hope everyone can do the same and not give them another dime.

July 22, 2009 at 9:53 am
(38) AB says:

Chase did the same to my old Wamu card. First increased APR to 30.9% and then finally closed it. I always 3-5 times minimum. Had FICO >700 but still I was a bad credit risk. Shame on these credit card companies. I’ll pay it off and dump them for good.

July 22, 2009 at 4:09 pm
(39) PissedOFF says:

I originally had my card with Providian, then they morphed into WaMu, then into Chase. Now Chase send me a letter the other day cutting my 6k credit in half to 3K. I’ve had this card for 5+ years…never a late payment ever. Always paid more than minimum.

Folks they are attacking the GOOD PEOPLE!!! **** them!!!

Get off credit!! STOP USING PLASTIC!!! and that means your debit card!

WE MUST GO “ALL CASH” and (Personal Checks) AND KEEP ALL MONEY ON HAND AND NOT IN THE DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY BANKSTERS HANDS!

Stop being a pawn…this is the last straw. Our hard earned tax payer monies went to these ****. And what do we get for it?

July 23, 2009 at 5:09 pm
(40) Chad says:

I am fed up with Chase! I have a WAMU card, been a card holder for 6 yrs. Never late and made sure I paid 4-5 times the minimum payment. I have a checking account with Chase and Chase recently came in and swooped my mortgage up from Fannie May. Now I get a letter saying because I have too much (credit accounts) with Chase they’re canceling my WAMU card! I called and a manager said I’m now considered a credit risk! I told him I sure as hell wasn’t a credit risk when they came in and bought my 180,000 mortgage! I am canceling the checking account and plan to never do buisness with Chase again. I can’t wait until the market corrects itself and they start begging me to open up another credit card. I will be sending everyone single one of them back with a big ole F**K You on them!

July 23, 2009 at 6:31 pm
(41) Ron says:

same thing here, just recieved a letter stating:
-Total available credit on bankcards is too low
-Average length of time since bankcard(s) opening is too short
-Too few accounts paid as agrees compared to local accounts
Calling their number on the letter only resulted in some foreign woman repeating “I’m sorry sir, if you would like to dispute your credit report, you will have to contact Experian.” After she repeated this about 18 times, she promptly hung up on me. I call back and speak to another rep (I think it was the first ladies sister)with the same result.
So I get my credit report from Experian and my credit score comes back as excellent (high 700’s). I do a little Googleing and find that this seems to be a common thing with WaMu clients. A little more searching and I manage to dig up some very important phone numbers. Well, I call the CEO of credit card services and he has assured me he will investigate my account and get back with me in the morning. I’ll let you know how that goes.

you can find this interesting list of phone numbers at:

I too am a victim of the EVIL CHASE BANK.
The letter arrived and said the same as the other posts here.I called, gave them a piece of my mind. The person on the other end of the phone could give me no reason for the cancellation of my account.I am an x wamu customer never late on a payment and paid more than the minimum payment due.Nice, they get OUR money/steal/ from the numerous bailouts, buy out our bank, raise the interest rate then send you the “letter” of destruction.
They are robbers plain and simple and i am glad to end the relationship.
Down with CHASE!!

Like all of the others on this board, the same thing happenend to me with Chase on July 21st. I believe they had planned it all along as soon as they took over WaMu. Raise the rates, make us pay with higher interest rates so they can make profit from us for a while, then close all accounts that originated with WaMu. I have been diligent with my credit and have a score of 722. I know there are no negatives on my report but was told the same thing everyone else here was told by some foreign woman whom you could hardly understand. I am writing letters to the Attorney General, the FTC, Office of the Comptroller, Federal Reserve, President Obama, and my local congressmen and senators. There is strength in numbers and maybe if enough people complain about the wrongful practices of Chase, a classaction lawsuit against them would begin.

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is that good people sit back and do nothing about it.”

I guess it’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one, but this stinks for all of us. I too got the letter, made the phone calls, got the same BS answers. I even had the guy pull up my WAMU account and both Chase accounts so he could see I paid off over $20,000 in debt during the month of May, and only ended up frustrated and angry. Is there anything we can do? This simply isn’t right.

(45) Dale DeBruyn says:

I had my credit closed with out notice.
I belive that the reason is so Chase
can force a lot of these closed account
in to a large write off. It helps their
bottom line since Washington Mutual was
a gift to them by you and me as tac payers.
So they do not care if you had the WaMu
credit card 10 days or 10 years.
If everone across America set a time and date
and walked to their ould Wamu bank and closed
their accouts would casue a run that would
bring Chase to the end. That the only way to send them a message.

I had my checking and credit line with WaMu. My checking was a lot either to read and get to online, and my credit line was to! As soon as my credit account moved to Chase I noticed the rate went up and now I have no free monthly FICO score. Chase is supposed to be the biggest bank in the country, why can’t they offer free FICO and lower rates..

Cindi in Nebraska says:”…Contact all the people we can..”

There’s a list of contacts on another thread here.
Search “Watch Your Chase Credit Cards”

The main contacts are to send an on-line complaint form to the OCC, your State Attorney General and now I would also add sending an email to Experian asking them if they supplied false reports to Chase, since Chase is saying they closed all of these account because of problems with every single customer that was with Washington Mutual.
(What a coincidence!)

Ormar says:”…why can’t they offer free FICO and lower rates”

If you Google “JPMorgan Chase earns $2.7 billion” and read the July 16, 2009 story, you will see why they can’t afford to show you the FICO Scores they are destroying on you. They are too busy ripping you off to look good to investors.

No offence to banking.about.com, but why isn’t this story getting picked up by CNN, FOX News or any of the mainstream cable/satellite media?

Seems to me this is going to have major repercussions on the economy.
I’m not sure just how many ex-WaMu’ers there are, but everyone of them that had a balance on their credit cards before Chase did the “Closed by Financial Institution”, is going to pay dearly on their FICO Scores.

What Chase is doing is “FICO Terrorism”

Chase is not accepting card payments until well after the due date to be able to charge huge late fees and interest. I paid last bill 7 days before due (on line)and they didn’t cash it until 2 weeks after it was sent which was a week after the due date.

I also got the letter today telling me they closed my account and the letter is dated 7/29/09 and it arrived on 7/31/09 and after a phone call I find out the card was closed on 7/21/09 lol I mean that is just unreal that they never reflect the change online (which i use all the time) and dont bother to inform me till 10 days after it was closed and a charge i have each month thru Microsoft was declined and I would have no way of finding this out.
I was a wamu customer never late started with a $4,000 credit line built it up to $7,500 with perfect performance and paid online always the day after my statement printed and i would pay off the whole balance or pay several hundred, for example I had $150 on my card and I knew that a $10 charge was coming from Microsoft so I paid the $150 + $10 so that I would have a zero balance and because I over paid and they DECLINED my regular Microsoft charge I now have a closed card with a credit of $11

I was never late
Never over the limit NEVER even close to it
and I have had the card for several years

Im just pissed because Chase lied to the American people they took over WAMU and after the bail out they are closing customer with false lies I have 2 companies watching my credit and nothing has changed in the 2 years and in fact my score kept going up.

Good bye chase hope a class action law suit comes your way

(52) Bob in NEW YORK says:

I just recieved a letter canceling my chase account too. it reads Total available credit on bankcards is too low
Average length of time since bankcard(s) opening is too short
Too few accounts paid as agrees compared to local accounts
then it also has has the contact info for experian on it, stating they checked the report, when I called customer service, and gave them my info, they automatically knew the account was closed and didn’t want to discuss the issue, they were rude, and could careless.they stated it was because of info they recieved from experian.I checked my experian credit report to find no negative info.so, the account was closed for no reason at all, they did it just becasue they can.to wrap it up with with a little about my history,I started off with wamu, always paid never late, never the minimum,I had a 3500.00 limit, never touched max, most ever charged was 1000.00, and paid off the balances with large installments.this was the only gredit card I had,I have very good credit, I have a morgage, a car loan, and have a very secure civil service job.the way I look at is, chase must not need clients that are stable, and pay as agreed.their loss,I owe them 600.00, I will make 2 installments and be done with them,I will never hold another account with them ever again, and I will be sure to spread the news about my expierience with chase to anyone thats interested.

Chase did not close my account but they did make several mistakes on my statement. The customer service rep was rude. I canceled my cc and will be closing my account as soon as possible. What a pain.

(54) sue says:

I, like many of you, have had 2 WAMU cards for some time now. I always paid on time and I paid more than I had to. I had no problems with WAMU. Then Chase takes over – both my cards’ APR skyrocketed. I called Chase and was told that they would not lower my rates at this time. I also tried to cancel my account insurance so that more would to go to balance. The person I was talking to just didn’t get it and he closed my account!!! I was switched around on the phone and was finally told that I would have to apply to re-open my account. I cut up my cards, am paying off the balances and can’t wait until I no longer have to deal with these people. They should be ashamed of themselves raising rates like that on loyal customers.

(55) Confused says:

I find it confusing that even though my accounts were rudely cancelled on July 21 with the letter following on August 1, that both accounts still have open credit lines. Both accounts are paid in full and when you call the 800 # or look online, I still have my full available credit. PLUS, I am still getting emails from them wanting to know if I would like to sign up for automatic payments on the cards!! Seriously Chase, if you are going to close my accounts, then close them all together!! Duh!

(56) Ex- WAMU staffer says:

Like others, was glad to see that I was not the only one having this experience. I had banked with WaMu since they bought out CrossLand Savings where I was an employee… figured, well, I will give Chase a chance since it will be a pain to transfer our accounts that have been open for so long…. They jacked up our APR from 9.99% to over 20% – our credit is good – just qualified for top tier auto loan rate. The customer service rep “Aron” was basically like “stuff it” – so I did and just paid off the card and will be moving our deposit accounts as well… told him I was so happy that they were taking care of their new western customers… what a crock.

Chase is hideous. Have been a loyal Wamu credit card holder with excellent credit. Chase takes over lower my credit line raise my APR and generally are awful! I cancelled my credit card with them. Also notice that my minimum balances go up and down at whim. They are disgraceful!

face it there are Crooks in this world and Chase is one of them, and I am one person that will do everything I can to tell others NOT to bank with them. This is sleazy of them,so jst do everything yo can to protect the fico score and still show them that they are jst big crooks.

(59) Peter L. says:

Chase is, hands down, the worst company I have ever dealt with. Like many of you here, I also have an excellent credit rating. My payment history with my Wamu card was flawless – I always paid more than the minimum and was never late. When Chase bought Wamu, they suddenly raised my APR to 29.99%. My first instinct was to opt out and immediately close the account, but I did not want a black mark on my otherwise perfect credit rating.

So… I decided to just swallow the high interest and pay the thing off as quickly as possible, but I ultimately realized that this would be a VERY BAD IDEA. Fortunately, I found these message boards. Otherwise, I would not have known about Chase’s new strategy of tricking people into accepting a high APR and then CLOSING THEIR ACCOUNT DOWN ANYWAY. People are telling the same story again and again on message boards everywhere.

It’s unbelievable – Chase actually waits until you accept their ridiculous new terms and then abruptly shuts down your account, forcing the customer to pay 30% interest AND screwing up your credit rating at the same time. It’s criminal.

I called Chase in an attempt to obtain some assurance that they would not close my account if I accepted their new terms. Of course, they would provide me no such assurance. I then asked them what their criteria would be for making a decision to close my account – “My FICO score is excellent, I have never been late on any payment to anybody EVER and I have no intention of ever being late. So, what action on my part would cause you to close my account?” They told me that there is a separate department that makes those decisions. I asked for their phone number. Chase said “they don’t have phones in that department.” I asked for an email or fax or any contact information. Chase told me they could not provide this information and that this department “does not interact with the public.”

So, after talking to the supervisor’s supervisor and still getting the same rude run-around, I told them to just close my account. Three days later, I get an account alert from one of my other cards. It says “Warning: Your TransRisk Credit Score has changed.” Yep. It really happened that fast.

I strongly urge everyone to avoid doing business with Chase. They are truly the worst of the worst.

I read Peter L’s comments and they did the same thing to me. How in the world are they getting away with this? Write my congressman? Are you kidding? They flay don’t care. This country is going down fast folks and I mean down!

What has happened to our former wonderful country? …ya I know it’s just a cc, but this IS CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR BY CHASE BANK!!!

same thing happened to me. I ordered items on line and when I went to pay I found out that my credit card had been cancelled by Chase. Never had any problems with WAMU. How can they do this?

September 9, 2009 at 11:45 am
(62) Stranger32 says:

I had two credit cards with Wamu and one credit card with Chase. After Chase took over Wamu, they closed one of my credit cards and decreased the credit limit to the point I owe. At the same time, they increased my credit limit of the Chase credit card.

When I called them, they did not make sense. I told them that since the takeover I am not a happy customer and I might transfer my accounts to somewhere else.

Customer Rep. told me “you have that option and you should use that option”

I am cancelling all my checking accounts, direct deposit, and credit cards… if they don’t give a shoot to their customers I am not going to stay there.

Their only explanation is “we are very strong financially”… maybe you are but you suck at customer service.

(63) Sapodilla says:

Both my husband and I cancelled our Chase credit cards. We were customers with WAMU for many years without any problems. We never paid late, and had very low interest rates. We had even transferred balances from another card to take advantage of the low interest rate. When Chase took over, they sent us letters stating that they were raising both rates. We immediately cancelled our cards. It is totally unfair, because we signed up for fixed rates, and it was changed to variable the minute Chase took over. That should be illegal. Everyone should cancell Chase, and refuse to do business with them. They exploit people.
