Watch Bank Fees in 2010

Banks may start the new decade by increasing fees. Not exactly what you'd expect, right?

New laws make it harder for banks to ding you, but still banks have some time to create rules that generate fees (and disclose those rules to you, of course).  You should see a slew of 'amendment' notices coming your way if you haven't already.

The Wall Street Journal says that consumers may not win.  Instead of collecting money the old-fashioned way, banks will have to innovate.  They'll get creative about how they can charge new fees and generate revenue, and they may do away with low cost products like free checking.

Over the next few months, keep an even closer watch over your account statements and transactions.  If you see unexpected fees, figure out if you can avoid them.  Your bank may have alternative account options, or you may decide to go elsewhere.
