So you're walking into your bank or credit union, and somebody asks for a favor: would you be willing to cash a check for them?
It may seem like a helpful gesture, but you might just help somebody commit fraud.
It happened at a credit union in Wisconsin, and it happens elsewhere. Consumerist shares the story of a friendly UW Credit Union customer approached by a stranger lurking outside the branch. It turns out the checks were drawn on closed accounts, and the guy walked away with almost $1,000 in cash that day.
If somebody hanging around a branch asks to use your name and signature to get money, consider the possibility of a scam. There may be a legitimate reason they need your help, but I'd think twice before doing it. Depending on how the scam is set up, you might risk losing money from your account.
