2009 Bank Robbery Data

By , About.com GuideApril 7, 2010

Follow me on:

Were there more bank robberies last year as a result of the recession?

It turns out that bank robberies decreased from 2008.  When you count all types of financial institutions (credit unions, banks, savings and loan, etc) the total comes to 5,943.  In 2008 that number was 6,700.

Perhaps the word is getting out that bank robbery is not the best way to get your hands on money.

Bank robberies are often uneventful (ideally, for the safety of all involved) and not a very good deal for robbers.  Commercial banks see the most robberies, probably because there are more locations to tempt robbers.

The Financial Brand summarized FBI data from 2009 and provides graphics to help illustrate when and how bank robberies happened.
