We use ATMs regularly, and we're used to them. However, there's a lot of room for improvement.
Instead of sticking with what's worked before, BBVA and IDEO designed a new ATM. Using it should be a better experience, and hopefully it'll nudge other banks to get creative as well.
You can see photos and video at The Financial Brand.
The first thing you'll notice is that it's turned sideways. Instead of having a line of people behind you (who are undoubtedly interested in your PIN and how much cash you're taking), you can use the ATM while keeping one eyeball on the crowd.
The machine also has a touchscreen, which should keep the line moving faster. Instead of hunting through buttons that don't do anything, the display will only offer options that you can use.
A few of these ATMs are already in service, and more will appear in coming years
