Goodbye to Overdraft Fees

New overdraft rules went into effect over the weekend.   If you didn't opt-in to an overdraft protection program, you'll have a harder time spending more than you have.

Banks must now decline transactions that would overdraw your account (unless you give them permission).  That means overdraft fees are a thing of the past for many.

The new rules apply to debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals.  However, automatic electronic payments and physical checks can still cause overdrafts - along with the familiar fees.  One more reason not to write checks.

If you want overdraft protection, get in touch with your bank.  Most people seem comfortable without it, so banks are pushing hard:  marketing overdraft programs and trying to appeal to your fears.
