Lenders have been working through a torrent of foreclosures as homeowners default in record numbers.
Unfortunately, they've not been able to keep up with the workload and may have cut a few corners. Over the last few weeks, details about automated foreclosure filings have emerged.
Some lenders used "robo-signers" to process thousands of foreclosures every week, resulting in foreclosures that never should have happened. Even a man who paid cash for his home - with no loan outstanding - was affected.
Now, borrowers and attorneys are taking a close look at foreclosure filings and fighting back. Lenders have also moved away from robo-signing after criticism from consumer advocates and scrutiny from regulators.
