PBS recently aired a 5-part series covering the mortgage crisis. If you want to get up to speed on how loans brought the economy to a screeching halt, the Making Sen$e series can help.
Videos are available online, or you can watch an encore of the series on TV all next week (starting December 27th). You'll find out about loans gone bad, attempts to fix the problem, and new developments. I've not watched much of the series, but what I've seen is pretty good.
