What do you do when somebody uses your debit or credit card? A good first step is to call the bank.
The Consumerist shares a story about a reader who did even more. After reporting unauthorized charges on his card, the bank said there's not much more to do -- the card gets canceled, and the scammers have to use a different card number.
Instead of waiting patiently for a new card, the man did some digging to find out where the old card was used. He got refunds from the online retailers, and presumably the scammers will have to find another way to order their goods.
As a consumer you generally don't have to do this -- in many cases you're protected from fraudulent use as long as you report it in a timely manner and try to prevent it. However, it sounds like the guy in the story feels better having stopped at thief.
