If you're self-employed, it's never been especially easy to get a mortgage. You've probably had to provide letters, tax returns, and other additional proof that you're making a living on your own.

The financial crisis did not help. Now, everybody has a hard time getting a mortgage -- not just freelancers.

What can you do? Flexo at Consumerism Commentary shares a few tips on getting a mortgage without a steady paycheck. You have to be a little bit more polished that most borrowers, with better credit and documents at the ready. In addition to taking his advice, you can also follow his lead and make yourself a W-2 employee.

Lenders want to see that you have a steady income. Ultimately it doesn't matter if it's W-2 income or 1099 income -- the most important thing is that you can make them feel confident that you'll continue to earn a living.
