You've heard about the death of free checking, but it's not entirely gone. Free accounts are still alive and well -- especially at small banks and credit unions.
American Banker shows free checking account availability at different types of institutions (with a chart that really tells the story). About one third of the biggest banks still offer these accounts, but they've been drying up quickly. Small banks and credit unions are going strong; the majority of them still have free checking on the menu. [via Consumerist]
Banks have reacted as laws have changed. They're not giving as much away -- or they're making you qualify for free accounts. I just got a letter yesterday telling me that a bank will begin charging for my type of account unless I qualify for a waiver.
Keep your eyes on your mail and your accounts and you can spot these new fees. If you need to switch banks, consider small institutions.
