Definition: When you work with important financial forms, a notary must verify everybody's identity and make sure the documents are executed properly. The notary charges a modest fee for this service.

Sometimes notary services are available for free at your bank or credit union. Otherwise, a fee of $5 to $20 is normal. For mortgage closings, the fee tends to be on the higher side.
