Banks Hire Hackers to Test Security

I don't know if this should make you feel better or worse. Financial institutions (like banks and credit unions) hire hackers and other "security consultants" to try to steal customer data. While that's reassuring, the results they get are pretty scary -- these imposters succeed pretty much every time. You can listen to a story about this at the TIME Business Podcast (the story is called Hackers For Hire, or just get the MP3).

No matter how careful you are with your information, scammers can still get it due to sloppy practices at your financial institution. What can you do? Monitor your credit reports for any suspicious activity, and choose institutions that appear to have their act together.
