Getting Comfortable With Mortgage Lenders

Bad press in recent years exposed some nasty behavior, but you may need to borrow money.  How can you avoid getting ripped off?

If you don't have time and experience to learn about the mortgage market, the best you can do is work with good people.  Submit applications to lenders with a good reputation.  One way to find these lenders is to ask around; friends, family, and professional contacts may be able to provide names.

For extra credit, find out about your lender's qualifications and look for red flags in their history.  Bankrate provides a few details on how to find a mortgage lender you can trust.

The financial crisis was difficult for everybody.  One positive outcome is that some of the worst offenders failed out of business.  With new rules and tight money, they've moved on to other activities.
